When 28-year-old Laurie Zakaria became engaged, she knew that she wanted her mother to be at her wedding. The only problem was that Zakaria’s mother, Wadad Zakaria, had been battling lung cancer for three years.
Laurie began planning a wedding for just two months after her engagement to guarantee her mother could be there.
However, the illness had overtaken her, and Wadad, who has lingered in stage four for the past year, began suffering from depleting oxygen levels. Laurie had originally planned to be married on a Sunday but a decision was quickly made to move the wedding up to the Friday before.
